How to Make a Big Stink Using Chemicals
Everybody's heard of stink bombs, but what if you want a greater stink? These methods teach you how to make chemicals that smell worse than a stink bomb. The chemicals are available online from a company called Sigma-Aldrich.
Part 1Phosphorus Pentasulfide
3This method works by generating hydrogen sulfide gas, which stinks of rotten eggs.
Part 2Sulfuric Acid and Potassium Iodide
3Add 50ml of sulfuric acid. This works in the same way as the phosphorus pentasulfide method―by generating hydrogen sulfide gas.
3The Lawesson's reagent reacts with the alcohols in the surgical spirit. It swaps the oxygen atom in the alcohols for a sulfur atom, thus generating a thiol or mercaptan (different names for the same thing). Mercaptans are used to give a smell to natural gas. They are also a key component of skunk spray.
1Even though the name has the word "cyanide" in it, most isocyanides aren't toxic.
3Silver cyanide is sold as a powder. It is toxic, so don't ingest it. It will cause skin irritation, so wear latex (or nitrile) gloves while handling it. Under no circumstances should you heat it as this will produce toxic hydrogen cyanide gas.
4It should react to form allyl isocyanide and silver iodide. Silver iodide is a yellow precipitate, so the formation of a yellow solid shows that the reaction has occurred.
5Do not buy tert-butyl isocyanide, as it is a different chemical. Butyl isocyanide smells, but tert-butyl isocyanide is toxic.
1Sci-Show ranked it as the second-most dangerous chemical due to its intense smell. When this chemical was accidentally synthesized in Freiburg, Germany in 1889, the city had to be evacuated. If you're going to make this stuff, make sure that you truly want to do this.
3You can tell when it has cracked: trithioacetone is a white solid, but thioacetone is a brown or orange liquid.
4If you are going to store it, do so below -20 degrees Celsius.
